Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana Recognizes Clinical Staff for Nurses Week 2015

May 11, 2015

BATON ROUGE, La. – The theme of National Nurses Week 2015 is “Ethical Practice. Quality Care,” and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana is recognizing its more than 150 licensed nurses for upholding these principles.

“I often hear great stories about the work our nurses are doing that makes a difference in the lives of our members,” said Dr. Paul Murphree, Blue Cross’ interim chief medical officer. “They support members in reaching their health goals and accessing care. Our nurses also support the providers in our network by working with their patients between appointments to help them stay healthy. Their work lets us realize our mission to improve the health and lives of Louisianians.”

Most of Blue Cross’ nurses work in Clinical departments, where they provide health coaching to members who have chronic conditions like diabetes or heart disease, or have complex health needs like transplant surgery or high-risk pregnancy, which require additional care coordination. Blue Cross also employs nurses in its policy, quality improvement and anti-fraud divisions.

Nurses are a key element of Quality Blue Primary Care (QBPC), Blue Cross’ signature quality improvement program. In QBPC, nurses are in direct contact with primary care physicians’ offices around the state to identify gaps in care quickly and address them with individual patients. Members in QBPC also get regular health coaching from nurses between their doctor visits, to help them stick to their treatment plans. Although QBPC is a fairly new program, members whose doctors are participating are already seeing better health results.

Blue Cross has produced a series of video interviews with different Clinical staff members, including nurses, pharmacists, social workers, dietitians and doctors, to show how they help members protect their health. Visit to learn more about Blue Cross’ in-house medical team.

The American Nurses Association has designated the week of May 6-12, which coincides with Florence Nightingale’s birthday, to honor nurses across the country for their important role in the healthcare system. For more information about National Nurses Week, visit the American Nurses Association at
