Blue Cross Partners with Louisiana Law Enforcement Agencies to Offer Safe Disposal of Prescription Painkillers

Feb. 10, 2016

As evidence continues to mount about the skyrocketing rate of painkiller abuse, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana and law enforcement partners have come together to help Louisianians dispose of unused or expired prescription drugs.

Locally, Blue Cross has worked with the National Association of Drug Diversion Investigators and 29 local law enforcement agencies across the state to install secure prescription drop boxes. Area residents can bring their unwanted pills to a local drop box, where the contents are emptied daily and disposed of safely and correctly by law enforcement.

Blue Cross hopes that the drop box will help slow the abuse of painkillers and other prescription drugs. Studies show that these kinds of pills are most often stolen from the homes of family members and friends.

“We’re hoping to dispose of 10,000 pounds of pills this year through 24 drop boxes around the state” says Michael Tipton, president of the Blue Cross Foundation, Blue Cross’ philanthropic subsidiary. “When you look at the research, it’s clear that safely disposing of painkillers is one of the best weapons against patterns of addiction that often start at home.”

The easy availability of opioid painkillers—such as hydrocodone and oxycodone—is at the root of a rapid rise in abuse in Louisiana and around the nation. According to the Trust for America’s Health, the number of deaths caused by painkiller overdose has tripled in Louisiana since 1999. Louisiana recorded nearly 780 overdose deaths in 2014, the last year for which data are available.

Around the nation, the Centers for Disease Control says that the number of painkiller overdoses has quadrupled since 2000.

Law enforcement agencies are the only entities legally able to accept unwanted prescription drugs and dispose of them properly.

The availability of drop boxes around Louisiana is made possible with help from the National Association of Drug Diversion Investigators (NADDI), a national nonprofit created to help U.S. law enforcement agencies investigate and prosecute prescription drug abuse.

“When someone is treated for a severe injury or undergoes major surgery, there are usually prescription drugs left over,” says Charlie Chicon, executive director of NADDI. “Our goal is providing a method of disposal that ensures medications don’t end up in the wrong hands.”
