Blue Cross Shares Savings with Eligible Individual Members

Sept. 16, 2020

BATON ROUGE – Today, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana announced it will provide rebates to 19,000 members across the state. Members who were covered in 2019 under a Blue Cross individual or family PPO plan may be eligible for a rebate. Those who were covered under an employer’s plan in 2019 do not qualify.

Success from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana’s efforts to hold the line on healthcare costs have enabled the insurer to share savings in the form of rebate checks to eligible members. Checks will be issued in September.

“At Blue Cross, we are focused on improving the quality of care and lowering healthcare costs for our fellow Louisianians, and there are several ways we do that,” said I. Steven Udvarhelyi, M.D., president and CEO of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana. “One example is a program we launched several years ago called Quality Blue. This program rewards healthcare providers for getting better results for their patients, especially those with chronic conditions. Each year we see improved health and greater savings from these programs.”

According to Udvarhelyi, the savings from Quality Blue, combined with a concerted effort to hold down the cost of medicines and services, have resulted in the insurer’s ability to issue rebates to these 19,000 qualifying members.  Rebates are part of the federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, which sets a minimum percent of the premiums they collect every year on medical care and quality improvement programs for members.

“We work hard to give our members the most value their plans have to offer, and we’re happy our efforts have paid off,” Udvarhelyi said.

Eligible members will receive a letter explaining the rebate, and should then receive their checks in the next few weeks. Members with questions can call the Customer Service number on the back of their ID card.
