BATON ROUGE, La. – Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of summer. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana urges everyone to keep the season healthy by getting the COVID-19 vaccine if you haven’t already to stop the virus’ spread.
Earlier this month, the State of Louisiana announced anyone age 12 and up can make an appointment to get the COVID-19 vaccine. This followed the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) authorization of the Pfizer vaccine for anyone 12 and older. The other two COVID-19 vaccines, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson, are available to anyone 18 and older.
Health officials have repeatedly stated that the COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective and that getting the jab is the most effective way to prevent getting sick with the virus or spreading it to others.
“Getting the vaccine is especially important if you’re planning to travel this summer or if your children will be attending camps, playing sports or doing other group activities. The more people who get vaccinated, the more immunity we’re building in our community,” said Dr. Tracy Lemelle, a pediatrician who is one of Blue Cross’ medical directors.
