Blue Bikes Go Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness
50 bikes share special designs, messages about the importance of screening

Oct. 3, 2022

NEW ORLEANS, La. – In support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Blue Bikes are going pink. Through Oct. 31, 50 bikes in the fleet will feature pink baskets and designs about the importance of breast cancer screening.

Riders can take or share pictures of the pink Blue Bikes to show why they #RidePinkNOLA. Follow Blue Bikes on social media @BlueBikesNOLA to enter a contest during October for a chance to win a one-year Blue Bikes membership ($300 value).

“We hope the pink bikes are a visual reminder that screening saves lives,” said Dr. Jeremy Wigginton, medical director at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana. “Mammograms are very effective at catching breast cancer in its earliest stages, when treatment is most likely to be successful.”

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), breast cancer is one of the most common cancers diagnosed in the United States. While breast cancer is usually diagnosed in women age 50 and older, younger women and men are affected, too.

"The Ride Pink Nola campaign is a fantastic example of how community-run bikeshare is able to support the health and well-being of residents of New Orleans,” said Geoff Coats, CEO of Blue Krewe, the local nonprofit that manages Blue Bikes. “Since the relaunch of Blue Bikes last summer with a new fleet of pedal-assist e-bikes, riders have pedaled over 300,000 miles and have taken more than 200,000 trips! This October, Blue Krewe is thrilled to partner with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana to promote breast cancer awareness, and we look forward to seeing more smiling faces hopping on the pink Blue Bikes to cruise around town."
