Blue Cross Named A Top 10 Military Friendly Employer

Nov. 11, 2020

BATON ROUGE, La. – Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana has been named a 2021 Top Ten (T10) Military Friendly Employer. The designation from G.I. Jobs, an important service for helping veterans and those transitioning from active military duty find civilian career and academic opportunities, recognizes the insurer’s efforts to attract, recruit and retain current and former military members as employees.

Blue Cross will be featured in the 2021 Military Friendly Employer guide as #10 in the country. The guide is issued to service people as they transition out of active duty and is distributed to National Guard and Reserve Centers, Veteran Affairs offices and Transition Assistance Program classes worldwide.

“We are proud of our efforts to develop a corporate culture that attracts the best talent for our diverse workforce, and that includes hiring employees who have proudly served their country,” said Blue Cross Director of Diversity Programs and Business Development Roderic Teamer. “We are honored to see Blue Cross recognized nationwide as a top military friendly employer, and we appreciate the accomplishments of our veteran and active service team members – and their families, who also make sacrifices as the ones they love serve – that made this designation possible.”

Blue Cross’ veteran-friendly culture and programming were factors in the T10 designation. Among the initiatives to recognize current and former military members are education and outreach sessions about military service for all employees, companywide recognition of military-focused holidays or observances and an employee resource group (ERG), Boots to Blue, for employees who are currently serving the U.S. Armed Forces, those who have served and those who are members of military families or support the military.

“Military service is a great way to gain hands-on experience in different areas and develop leadership skills, and those qualities are incredibly valuable to civilian employers,” said Geoff Michelli, Blue Cross manager in IT – Cybersecurity and chair of the Boots to Blue ERG. “It’s rewarding that we can take what we learned in active service and apply it toward improving the health and lives of Louisianians here at Blue Cross.”

In February, Blue Cross’ Team Blue volunteers, including its Boots to Blue ERG, joined the New Orleans Pelicans for a community project with Rebuilding Together New Orleans (Video: 1:41). Volunteers made repairs to the home of lifelong New Orleans resident and U.S. Marine Corps veteran Jack Dee.
