Make At-Home Fitness Fun with These Five Tips

May 24, 2021

Fitness Matters at Every Age

BATON ROUGE, La. – Don’t give up on staying fit just because you’ve been staying close to home to lower your COVID-19 risk. Getting regular exercise is important for good health, especially for adults 60 and older. Exercise helps keep your heart healthy, can lower your risk of long-term conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure and can improve your strength and balance to prevent falls.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana offers five tips you can use to keep active from the comfort and safety of your home:

  • Add extra steps to your daily activities, such as when you’re brushing your teeth, talking on the phone or making meals
  • Stretch or move while you watch TV to get your blood flowing (commercial breaks are perfect for this)
  • Take a walk outside (don’t forget to stay six feet away from others)
  • Drink lots of water to avoid dehydration, which is more common in older adults because their sense of thirst declines
  • Check your health plan’s benefits to see what at-home fitness services like guided classes or workout equipment are covered
