NEW ORLEANS (Oct. 1, 2024) – NEW ORLEANS (Oct. 1, 2024) – Blue Bikes is excited to announce the return of the #RidePinkNOLA campaign in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month! Throughout October, 50 bicycles in the fleet will sport eye-catching pink baskets featuring messages reminding riders of the importance of preventive screenings.

“We’re proud to bring back #RidePinkNOLA and raise awareness about this important health issue,” says Patrick Urbine, Blue Krewe Interim Executive Director. “With local New Orleans residents representing 70% of the more than 750,000 Blue Bikes trips taken since the community-run bikeshare system relaunched in 2021, this Year’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month campaign perfectly embodies the local nonprofit’s mission to promote not only affordable transportation but also community health and wellness here in New Orleans. Hop on a pink bike this October, snap a pic, and share why you #RidePinkNOLA!”

Early detection is crucial in the fight against breast cancer, which remains one of the most common cancers diagnosed in the United States. While breast cancer primarily affects women over 50, younger women and men are also affected. Health officials generally recommend women begin regular mammogram screening at age 40. But, recommendations can vary based on your family and medical history, so it’s important to have checkups with your healthcare provider and ask when to begin screening.

“Screenings save lives!” said Rod Teamer, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana director of Diversity Programs and Business Development and a Blue Krewe board member. “We partner with Blue Krewe each year on the #RidePinkNola promotion because it’s a visual reminder for our community of why mammograms and other screenings that catch cancer in the earliest stages, when treatment is more likely to succeed, are so important. Take the time to ride, and also take the time to check in with your healthcare provider – especially if it’s been more than year since your last checkup.”

Louisiana Blue Medical Director Dr. Emily Vincent recently did an interview with the Shreveport-Bossier City Advocate about the importance of mammograms and other preventive screenings.
Riders who spot a pink bike can share their photos on social media using the hashtag #RidePinkNOLA and be entered into a special prize draw.
